Vera and Oliver were slowly walking up the theater’s aisle. Vera had enjoyed the show and was thankful she was far removed from the trials and tribulations of dating. When Oliver asked if she’d like to go to the Quiet Distil for a nightcap, she politely declined. “I have a better idea,” she said boldly. “I have a balcony, bourbon, and some lovely cigars if you’d like to come back to my cabin.”

Oliver whistled as he walked around her stateroom. “This is one fancy cabin,” he said, removing his dinner jacket and placing it on the back of the couch. “The funeral business must be good.”

“Well, you know what they say about death and taxes,” Vera called out as she went into her bedroom to change out of her evening gown. “Death never sleeps, and neither do I. There are too many opportunities to make money and too many new ideas to ponder.” She came out in a beautifully embroidered caftan and walked to the wet bar. “How do you take your bourbon? Splash of water?” He nodded, and she began to pour the dark amber liquid into two cut crystal glasses. She handed him a drink, and they gave each other a silent toast as they clinked the crystal tumblers. “Shall we go out onto the patio and stink up the place? After being shown the smoker’s igloo yesterday, I can get away with it.”

Oliver smiled. He was enjoying Vera’s brash sense of humor. “I’ll bring the cigars,” he said. “But which box do you want me to bring?” There was a wooden box on the desk and another on the coffee table. “I hope you don’t plan to smoke that many on the cruise.”

Vera let out a little chuckle. “Bring the one on the desk, please.” She walked over to the coffee table and lifted the cigar box lid. “This one is my very fancy jewelry box. In fact, I should put these in there now.” She took off her jade necklace and earrings. “These are lovely but very heavy.”

Oliver looked at Vera in disbelief. “You keep your jewelry in a cigar box?”

“Yes,” she answered bluntly. “People tend to ignore cigar boxes as they are out of fashion. And when I travel, I slip the box into my bag, and it doesn’t leave my side.” She placed her earrings and necklace inside. When she looked up, she saw Oliver’s face. “Are you appalled by my taste in jewelry? I’ll admit the necklace is a bit pretentious.”

“No, not at all. I’m more surprised you don’t put your jewelry in the room safe. These are expensive pieces.”

For a split second, Vera remembered Justin’s preposterous words earlier in the evening, and she shook her head to get rid of them. “I’m sure I should, but I don’t trust hotel safes. I used one once and couldn’t get the damn thing to open, and neither could anyone else. It wasn’t until the next morning, when the general manager arrived with a locksmith, that it could be opened.
